In 1992, botanists in Gibraltar quietly closed the file on a flower. The Gibraltar campion, a soft pink wildflower that grew wild nowhere else on the planet, had not been seen for years. For a species with a single home, that silence was as good as an obituary. The plant survived only as pressed sheets in a herbarium, a handful of old records and the memory of people who had once known where to find it. Two years later, on a steep ledge high on the Upper Rock, someone found three plants still clinging to life. A flower the scientific world had written off was, it turned out, simply waiting to be noticed again. What happened next is one of the most quietly extraordinary survival stories on the Rock, and you can stand in front of its living proof today without so much as a climbing rope. Silene tomentosa belongs to the campion and catchfly tribe, the genus Silene within the carnation family. It is a woody-based perennial that reaches roughly forty centimetres in height, with soft, faintly downy leaves and bilobed petals in shades that run from pink to a pale, washed violet. The species name tomentosa refers to that gentle felting of fine hairs on the foliage. It was first described by the Swiss naturalist Carl Adolf Otth in the early nineteenth century, his account appearing in De Candolle's great catalogue of the world's plants, and from the very beginning it was understood to be something peculiar to Gibraltar alone. Endemism on this scale is unusual. Plenty of plants are scarce, but very few are restricted to one rock at the mouth of the Mediterranean and to nowhere else in the world. The Gibraltar campion is genuinely endemic to the territory, which means the Rock is not simply one of its homes. It is its only home, which is exactly why losing it would have meant losing it everywhere at once. The Rock of Gibraltar is a tilted block of Jurassic limestone rising sharply from the sea, and its geology does odd and wonderful things to plant life. Sheer cliffs, shaded fissures, salt-laden winds off two seas and pockets of thin calcareous soil create a mosaic of micro-habitats packed into a tiny area. Plants that might be outcompeted on open ground can persist on a ledge that almost nothing else can reach. It is the botanical equivalent of a hard-to-reach safe: difficult, hostile and, for a few specialists, the only place they can survive. The campion's modern story is a study in how hard it is to be certain a plant has truly gone. By the late twentieth century, botanists working beyond Gibraltar had concluded the species was extinct. Locally, the picture was more hopeful for a while. The botanical section of the Gibraltar Ornithological and Natural History Society still knew of the plant in 1985, holding on to the knowledge that it clung to life somewhere on the cliffs. Even that local optimism eventually ran out. By 1992 the society, too, reluctantly accepted that the Gibraltar campion was probably gone. Here is where the conservation timeline becomes genuinely unusual, and worth setting out plainly: Beyond Gibraltar, the species had been considered extinct by the wider botanical community. Within the territory, the last known plants were thought lost, leaving only herbarium specimens and records. No self-sustaining wild population was believed to exist anywhere on Earth. For a flower found in one place and one place only, that combination was as close to a death certificate as a plant can receive. Then, in 1994, came the moment that turned the story around. The Gibraltar campion was found again, growing wild within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. The rediscovery was tiny in scale and enormous in meaning: just three plants, surviving on the steep ground where nobody had expected to find them. It is hard to overstate what that meant.
