A ship stops at Gibraltar for one reason. It is the last or first cheap fuel before the Atlantic, sitting on the only door into the Mediterranean, and it can be done at anchor without paying for a berth. That is the entire commercial proposition, and it has held for three hundred years. Here is how the operation actually works in 2026, what it costs you in time, and when Gibraltar is the wrong answer. The [Gibraltar Port Authority](https://www.gibraltarport.com/bunkering/general-information) recorded **5,267 ship calls for fuel in 2025**, alongside 220 cruise calls, in the [published port statistics](https://www.gibraltar.gov.gi/uploads/statistics/2025/port/GPA.4.pdf). 2026 has run well ahead. The first half closed at **2,869 bunker calls against 2,548** for the same period last year, up around 12.6 per cent. May alone took 599 calls, the busiest single month recorded since at least 2011, and June came in 17 per cent up year on year. The catchment explains it. Something over 60,000 vessels transit the Strait every year and Gibraltar sits directly on the lane, [capturing a share of that traffic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shipping_in_Gibraltar) that no inland port can reach. Most bunkering here is done at anchor, not alongside. The [western anchorage](https://integr8fuels.com/bunkering-ports/bunkering-gibraltar/) holds roughly fourteen sheltered positions and is where the great majority of stems are delivered, by barge, to a vessel that never ties up. Around eight bunker barges operate in Gibraltar waters, which is what allows the port to turn over that call volume without a queue building. Not paying for a berth is a real saving and it is the reason the anchorage model persists. It also means your delivery is exposed to weather in a way an alongside stem is not. This is the part that decides whether Gibraltar saves you time or costs it. **VLSFO: 24 to 48 hours** is usually enough. **MGO: 48 to 72 hours**, because demand is higher against fewer suppliers. **Summer, June to September: 72 hours or more** if you want a guaranteed slot, because cruise activity stretches the delivery windows. Booking a stem on twelve hours notice in August is how a nine hour call becomes a twenty hour one. The port is efficient. The supply chain into it is not infinitely elastic. A well planned stem is fast. In one documented case a vessel on the Asia to Europe route took **2,500 tonnes during a nine hour anchorage call**, which is the kind of turnaround the port is built for. Nine hours at anchor is also long enough to do everything else that needs doing. Spares, provisions, a technician, a crew change. Agents here treat the bunker call as the anchor point and hang every other task off it, which is why the same nine hours can carry three separate operations. Plan the stacking deliberately. A crew change scheduled to start after the stem finishes wastes the window, because the launch can run people ashore while the barge is still pumping. The vessels that turn round fastest here are the ones whose agent had every task queued before arrival rather than sequenced on the day. The other variable is the barge itself. A stem split across two barges, or a barge released late from a previous vessel, is the commonest reason a clean plan slips, and it is largely outside your control once you are at anchor. Build the slack in before you arrive rather than trying to recover it afterwards. > The fuel is why the ship stops. Everything else that gets done is why the stop is worth planning properly. The levanter is the easterly that forms a banner of cloud over the Rock and it is not a curiosity when you are trying to deliver fuel. A strong winter levanter can disrupt operations at the eastern anchorage. The western anchorage is sheltered and usable in most conditions, which is a large part of why it carries the bulk of the work. If your stem is planned for the eastern side in winter, build in slack. Three ports share this stretch of water and the honest answer is that they are not interchangeable. **Algeciras** is the bigger port by some distan
